The battery systems assembled in Martorell will power the CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID.Polo, the two electric models to be produced at this facility
- They are built using the Volkswagen Group’s Unified Cell, a global technology enabling speed, scale and flexibility across brands, regions and segments
- The start of operations at SEAT & CUPRA’s battery assembly plant further strengthens Martorell’s positioning as a flexible automotive powerhouse
SEAT & CUPRA has started the series production of battery systems at its plant in Martorell. After the inauguration of this facility in December, this milestone represents the final step before series production of the CUPRA Raval, the first model of the Brand Group Core’s Electric Urban Car Family that will hit the streets this summer. The batteries assembled here will also be used in the Volkswagen ID. Polo, the other electric model that will be manufactured in Martorell. The start of series production of these electric models will transform the plant into a flexible automotive powerhouse, fully prepared for the new era of mobility.
“The start of production of series assembly battery systems marks a decisive milestone in the final stretch of the transformation of our company and takes us closer to the series production of the CUPRA Raval. With the beginning of electric‑vehicle production, Martorell will strengthen its position as a fully flexible plant, ready to lead Spain’s transition to electric mobility by producing electric, hybrid, and highly efficient combustion models.”
Markus Haupt, CEO of SEAT & CUPRA
A NEW STANDARD IN EV BATTERIES
At the core of the battery systems assembled in Martorell is the Group’s Unified Cell, which represents a global battery technology platform designed to deliver scalability and flexibility across brands, regions and vehicle segments. Within each battery system, the cells provide the core energy storage capability, while the electronic components manage and control the system’s overall operation. The E Box, considered the brain of the battery, is manufactured entirely at SEAT & CUPRA’s El Prat Components facility, a clear example of industrial transformation, which now produces key components for electric vehicles after 45 years dedicated to the manufacturing of manual gearboxes.
ONE BATTERY SYSTEM EVERY 45 SECONDS
The battery system assembly plant has the capacity to produce 1,200 batteries per day and up to 300,000 units per year, equivalent to one battery every 45 seconds. The process starts in the logistics warehouse, where all components are supplied to the assembly line. Battery system assembly then begins with two parallel operations: pre-assembly of electrical components and the stacking of battery cells across two lines, using the cell-to-pack technology, allowing a more efficient battery system. These lines will produce 3,600 stacks per day through nearly half a million welding points.
After the battery system is fully assembled and sealed, it undergoes final quality checks on the benches to ensure maximum safety and performance. At the final step, the completed battery systems are then automatically transported via a 600-metre bridge to the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo production line, ensuring a continuous supply fully coordinated with the pace of manufacturing.
This series productions starts less than a year after the launch of the first pre-series battery systems to be rolled out of the Martorell assembly plant. In less than two years, SEAT & CUPRA has built this 64,000 m² battery system assembly plant in Martorell, combining automation with skilled manual labour, supported by 500 highly trained employees. In addition, the battery system assembly plant has 11,000 solar panels installed on the roof, providing 70% of the electricity needed for the assembly process, significantly reducing the facility’s environmental footprint. This facility is a key milestone in the final stretch of SEAT & CUPRA’s transformation towards electrification.
DRIVING ELECTRIFICATION IN EUROPE FROM THE IBERIAN PENINSULA
With the start of production at the battery system assembly plant, SEAT & CUPRA is making a decisive contribution to strengthening Europe’s battery industry, a key step towards making electric mobility accessible across the continent.
“As part of the Brand Group Core of the Volkswagen Group, the Iberian Peninsula is strengthening its position as a European hub for electromobility. Through the Electric Urban Car Family project, we will manufacture four electric models in Spain, starting with the CUPRA Raval, making electric mobility accessible from the Iberian Peninsula to customers across Europe.”
André Kleb, Chief Production Officer (CPO) for the Iberian Peninsula at the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core
2026 marks a historic milestone for SEAT & CUPRA as the company enters the final phase of its transformation with the launch of the CUPRA Raval, the first 100% electric vehicle to be produced in Martorell. This model will open a new era for the brand, as SEAT & CUPRA leads the development of the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family within Volkswagen’s Brand Group Core.
